Mel Bochner (b.1940), a leading figure of the American Conceptual Art movement, is best known for his text-based works and Thesaurus painting series. In his early work in the 1960s, Bochner introduced language into his artworks as a method to break with Abstract Expressionism and traditional compositions. “Thank You” is part of Bochner’s current Thesaurus series of synonyms that reveal the evolving lexicon of the English language. Each work is a monoprint completed in a unique rainbow-palette. Other pieces from the series, such as Amazing, Blah Blah, and Head Honcho all expose the flexibility, chronology and shifting discourse of language. Bochner’s work resides in the Art Institute of Chicago, the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
