Damien Hirst is a British contemporary artist who emerged on the international art scene as a Young British Artist in the late 1980s and has since become one of the most influential artists of his generation. In the 2000s, Hirst created a collection of ‘Psalm’ paintings and prints, each titled after an entry in The Book of Psalms. As part of his Kaleidoscope series, these exquisite works present colorful butterfly wings precisely arranged in intricate geometric patterns. For Hirst, the allure of butterflies is created by the appearance of the life they retain in death – the wing’s colorful patterns celebrate the dazzling aesthetic magnificence of life.
