Born in 1966 in Sidcup, England, abstract painter Ian Davenport is renowned for his paint line and puddle paintings. Through his meticulous creative process of pouring hundreds of thin acrylic lines down a canvas, Davenport has curated his own visual language that is simultaneously unique and malleable. What makes his work stand out is the combination of experimentation and scientific precision. Long vertical paths run down to the bottom and then are allowed to free flow in a puddle, creating a crisp colorful pattern. Centre is an example of his color exploration, as he arranges his vertical stripes in symmetrical order, which collect around a central focus that echoes a sequence of time passing. Davenport graduated in 1988 from Goldsmiths college in London, and appeared that same year in an exhibition curated by fellow graduate Damien Hirst titled “Freeze”. Since then Ian Davenport has exhibited at the Royal Academy of the Arts, the Galleria Nozionale in Rome, and the Hammer Museum, amongst various other institutions.
