Vertical Blockheads

Kenny Scharf (b. 1958) is a renowned artist affiliated with the 1980s East Village art scene in New York alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. He is best known for his work inspired by comic books and pop culture. Scharf coined the term “Pop Surrealist” to describe his one-of-a-kind imagery of hallucinatory worlds with bright-colored cartoon characters and anthropomorphic creatures. “Blockheads” is a 7 color lithograph that depicts six faces with different expressions, each in a square format. This playful piece shows moods like happy, confused, surprised and sad. Scharf’s work is held in the collections of The MoMA, New York; The Whitney, New York; The Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; The Broad Foundation, Los Angeles; among others. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles.
