Spanish artist Angeles Agrela is world renowned for her large scale works of female portraits, depicting them with luscious, color-saturated, larger-than-life hair, covering parts of their face. Agrela successfully explores themes of beauty and identity through the ironic appropriation of women’s roles in classical paintings. Growing up traveling and immersed in the art and fashion world, Agrela has always seen the importance of embellishment for self-expression. In Jimena, she chooses to expose her subject’s wide eyed face, framing her with mandarin orange locks. By rendering highly detailed women with masks of luminous hair, and intricately designed clothing, Angeles Agrela gives her subject a chameleon persona while also concealing their identity.
