Michael Craig-Martin (b. 1941) is a London-based contemporary and conceptual artist who is known for his minimalist works of quotidian objects. His distinctive style of paired-down everyday items probes the relationship between objects and images. “Sunglasses” is from Craig-Martin’s recent Fundamentals series, which also includes tennis racket, a remote, and a lightbulb. Precise, bold outlines demarcating flat planes of vibrant colors. The series examines the universal language of images to communicate the shared value of the everyday objects, both essential and insignificant. Craig-Martin was born in Dublin and is one of the most influential artists and teachers of his generation, having a lasting influence on Young British Artists like Damien Hirst.
