Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an African-American artist who has become one of the most influential figures that arose in 1980s New York. The print “Boxer Rebellion” is based on a work on paper Basquiat created in 1982-1983, which depicts two boxers exchanging blows, surrounded by references to boxing, the Chinese Boxer Rebellion, and related texts. Basquiat is known for incorporating elements of his cultural heritage into his artwork. Here, he shows the sport of boxing, famous black athletes and class struggle, as well as his trademark style of repeated and crossed out text, obsessive scribbling, and elusive symbols and diagrams. “Boxer Rebellion” is a posthumous release of an edition of 60 stamped and signed by Lisane Basquiat and Jeanine Heriveaux, the artist’s sisters and administrators of the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
