Fernando Botero
Man with dog, 2022
Watercolor and pencil on paper
16 x 12 in
Botero’s traditional style is characterized by bulbous, inflated subjects and the essential essence of whimsy in all of his works, which include sculpture, paintings, and drawings. Interpreted as ironic or humorous depictions of historical characters, Botero’s rotund personas are filled with a duality between their form and their emotional state. Born in Mendellin, Colombia, Fernando Botero is a predominantly self-taught artist who immigrated to Europe in the 1950s, traveling to Paris, Madrid, and Florence. His works have been shown in institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
