Recognized as a major figure in the New York Pop Art scene, amongst the likes of Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, painter and sculptor Tom Wesselmann draws his inspiration from American advertising and historical art references. Wesselmann uses a saturated color palette and creates steel cutout sculptures through his bold and innovative depictions of everyday objects, nudes, and still life. Between the colored lines of Wesselmann’s cutout compositions, the white walls of the gallery serve as negative space within the image. By doing so, he blurs the line between painted field, and sculpture. With humble beginnings, Tom Wesselmann started out selling cartoons to print publications. Today, his work frequently sells up to seven figures, and has been shown in collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, among many other institutions.
